Brooklyn Park covers about 27 square miles of northeast Hennepin County, with the Mississippi River forming its entire eastern edge and the Anoka County cities of Coon Rapids and Fridley on the far bank. The 2020 census counted 86,478 residents, sixth-most in Minnesota, and 2025 estimates keep it sixth at 83,543. There is no traditional downtown, a point the city's own 2040 comprehensive plan makes plainly, so daily life organizes instead around Brooklyn Boulevard, 85th Avenue and the Highway 610 corridor.
The city filled in two waves, and the seam is still visible at 85th Avenue, which the Village set as its development boundary in 1954 to hold down the cost of extending services. Everything south of that line went first. Just under half the housing stock, 14,210 of 28,442 units by the 2040 plan's tally of 2015 ACS data, dates to 1970 through 1989. North and west of Highway 610 came later and holds most of the remaining buildable land.
The draw here is price against the rest of the metro. Census Reporter put the median home value at $338,500 in the 2024 one-year ACS, and the stock runs heavily to detached single-family. The Blue Line extension comes up at nearly every showing: the Metropolitan Council's June 16, 2026 budget update put the project at $3.58 billion, with engineering near 90 percent complete, construction starting late 2027 and passenger service in 2033.
The housing
Detached single-family dominates: 17,058 of 28,442 units in the city's 2040 plan tally, which drew on 2015 ACS data, alongside 4,506 townhomes. Just under half the supply, 14,210 units, went up between 1970 and 1989. The older half of the city sits south of 85th Avenue, the Village's 1954 development boundary; newer subdivisions run north and west of Highway 610, where the buildable land remains.
Schools
Three districts split the city. Osseo Area Schools 279 covers most of it; Anoka-Hennepin 11 and Robbinsdale Area Schools 281 each take portions. Anoka-Hennepin enrolled 36,430 in 2024-25, the state's largest. Park Center Senior High, Brooklyn Middle STEAM and North View Middle sit inside city limits, as does Prairie Seeds Academy, a K-12 charter on West Broadway. Boundaries ignore city lines, so check the address.
Getting around
Interstate 94/694 crosses the south end, US 169 runs the western edge, Highway 252 the eastern side and Highway 610 the north; 610's final segment, west to I-94 in Maple Grove, opened December 9, 2016. The city's 2040 plan puts downtown Minneapolis roughly 20 minutes out. Metro Transit runs local and express buses. Blue Line light rail is now planned to carry passengers in 2033.
Parks & things to do
Mississippi Gateway Regional Park, renamed from Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, runs along the river, and Three Rivers Park District's Rush Creek Regional Trail heads 9.9 miles west from it to Elm Creek Park Reserve. Edinburgh USA is the city-owned golf course. Eidem Homestead is the historic farm; Zanewood Recreation Center and Central Park carry programming. Tater Daze each June marks the potato-farming past.

Is light rail actually coming to Brooklyn Park?
Yes, though not soon. The METRO Blue Line extension will include five stations in Brooklyn Park, from 63rd Avenue and Highway 81 north to the Oak Grove Parkway terminus. The Metropolitan Council's June 16, 2026 budget update put the project at $3.58 billion, engineering near 90 percent complete, construction starting late 2027 and wrapping by 2032, with passenger service in 2033. That date has moved before.
Which school district will my children attend?
That depends on the address, not the city. Osseo Area Schools 279 covers most of Brooklyn Park, but Anoka-Hennepin 11 and Robbinsdale Area Schools 281 each take in portions. Park Center Senior High on Brooklyn Boulevard is the only district high school inside city limits; Osseo's other two are in Osseo and Maple Grove. Prairie Seeds Academy, a K-12 charter at 6200 West Broadway, is the other in-city option.

What does the local job base look like?
Worth watching. Target's Northern Campus at 7000 Target Parkway topped the city's 2017 employer list at 3,700 jobs, but Target filed a WARN notice with Minnesota DEED on October 28, 2025 for a permanent mass layoff there effective January 3, 2026. Takeda runs a biologics plant in the city, and North Hennepin Community College and Hennepin Technical College both have Brooklyn Park campuses.
