Maple Grove covers 35.05 square miles in northwest Hennepin County, 32.57 of them land and 2.47 water, and counted 70,253 residents at the 2020 census. It was farmland and gravel pits well into the 1980s, and the housing stock shows it: the median home here was built in 1991, against 1973 for Hennepin County as a whole in the 2024 five-year ACS. Subdivisions wrap Weaver, Fish, Rice, Cedar Island and Arbor lakes, and Elm Creek.
The commercial center is Arbor Lakes, built in phases on ground that had been mined for gravel: Main Street from 1997 to 2001, The Shoppes in September 2003 at 412,000 square feet, and The Fountains, the third phase, at around 850,000 square feet. The City Council approved The Village, 295,470 square feet as planned, in April 2016, with construction starting two months later. North Memorial Health's Maple Grove Hospital opened in 2009 and has 130 private rooms.
What comes on the market splits two ways. Detached single-family is 64.6% of the 28,649 housing units in the 2024 five-year ACS; attached townhomes are another 20.3%, twice the 10.2% metro rate. Rental supply is limited — 82.3% of occupied units are owner-occupied, against 70.7% across the Twin Cities metro. In our experience listings here get located by the nearest lake or elementary attendance area rather than by a neighborhood name.

The median Maple Grove home was built in 1991 — newer than the metro's 1981 and Hennepin County's 1973 (2024 five-year ACS). Detached houses are 64.6% of the 28,649 units; attached townhomes are 20.3%, double the metro's 10.2%. Owner-occupancy is 82.3% of occupied units versus 70.7% metro-wide. The City Council approved a detailed land-use plan for the Gravel Mining Area South on November 18, 2019.
Schools
The city lists two public districts: Osseo Area Schools (ISD 279) and Wayzata Public Schools (ISD 284) — assignment follows the address, not the city line. Nine District 279 elementaries have Maple Grove addresses: Aspen Ridge, Basswood, Cedar Island, Elm Creek, Fernbrook, Oak View, Rice Lake, Rush Creek and Weaver Lake, plus Maple Grove Middle and Maple Grove Senior High.
Getting around
I-94 runs the length of the city, meeting I-494 and I-694 at the Fish Lake Interchange, where I-694 begins. MN 610 also starts at I-94 here. Maple Grove Transit is city-run, not Metro Transit: express routes 781, 784 and 785 reach downtown Minneapolis and 789 the University of Minnesota. On the schedule effective March 16, 2026, the 781 covers Transit Station to Marquette Avenue in 26 to 29 minutes.
Parks & things to do
Three regional parks are in the city: Elm Creek Park Reserve, at 4,900 acres the largest in Three Rivers Park District; Fish Lake Regional Park, with a beach and an accessible fishing pier; and 230-acre Eagle Lake Regional Park, on the Plymouth line. Central Park's 44 acres carry an 810-foot refrigerated skating loop, connect to 55 miles of city trails and host Wonders of Winter in February.

Which school district will my Maple Grove address be in?
The City of Maple Grove lists two: Osseo Area Schools (ISD 279) and Wayzata Public Schools (ISD 284). Boundaries do not follow the city line, so the answer depends on the address. Nine District 279 elementaries have Maple Grove addresses, and Maple Grove Senior High is the district's only high school in the city. Wayzata High School is in Plymouth. Confirm any address with the district before writing an offer.
Is there rail service between Maple Grove and Minneapolis?
No. Maple Grove has no passenger rail. The region's only commuter line, Northstar, ran through Anoka County and stopped short of Maple Grove; its last trains ran January 4, 2026, and Metro Transit replaced it with buses the next day. Transit here is Maple Grove Transit, run by the city rather than Metro Transit: weekday express routes 781, 784 and 785 to downtown Minneapolis and 789 to the University of Minnesota. What is the Gravel Mining Area?
It is the city's planning name for an area of active gravel pits being redeveloped for mixed use; Arbor Lakes was built on mined-out ground from it. The city started a more detailed land-use planning process for the southern portion in fall 2018, and the City Council approved the Gravel Mining Area South master plan on November 18, 2019.
